Handmade terracotta is a building material synonymous with elegance, sobriety and good taste. Many times we have heard of terracotta tiles: but what do we mean by this definition? How can they be used? This term identifies brick in the shape of a parallelepiped in terracotta: it can be handmade (printed one by one) or industrial (drawn or industrially printed).
In reality, the term terracotta tile evokes ancient traditions: an artisanal and hand-made product is identified. It is typically used in construction for floors or as tiles for the attic to complete warping in wooden beams.
A sky of trusses and wooden beams connected by the warm protection of terracotta tiles. Fornace Bernasconi produces a line of handmade bricks for the shelter of the attic. The malleability of the raw material and the in-house creation of the molds allow you to customize the aesthetic result in relation to the width and harmony you want by observing the structural warp.
It is synonymous with terracotta tile: when we talk about terracotta tiles in technical jargon, we mean the typically handcrafted rectangular brick that can be found in an old farmhouse or a country villa, used both as flooring and as cladding (under-roof).
The terracotta tile owes its versatility to its rectangular shape, which allows it to be widely used in terracotta floors (driveways, corridors, etc.) as it can perfectly adapt to existing spaces thanks also to the many possible laying patterns.
The purity and hardness of our clay (typical of Umbria), combined with wood firing (slow but very effective, as well as natural), allow the creation of terracotta tiles with dimensions well beyond the classic mezzana size, reaching formats of 20×40 or 20×50 cm and beyond. These bricks are naturally used both as flooring and as terracotta under-roof together with wooden beams, and their size and color are functional to the final aesthetic result.
Subject to availability, it is possible to request reclaimed terracotta tiles from our kiln, meaning used tiles in perfect condition that can be given a second life. These are inspected in advance by our staff, one by one, to verify how they have been treated. The best ones can return to the market. As we know, terracotta is an extremely durable and long-lasting material, which is why reclaimed terracotta tiles can be safely used in any type of construction.
The terracotta mezzana, an element of great quality and beauty, is generally used for under-roof cladding and frameworks as well as for flooring: it is therefore used both indoors and outdoors. The terracotta mezzana has a rectangular shape, in the standard size of 15×30 cm, with a thickness ranging from two to three centimeters.
The rectangular mezzana has very ancient origins, and for this reason can be defined as timeless beauty. It fits perfectly with classic, modern, or rustic environments (think, for example, of a beautiful under-roof with exposed beams).
